Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is the formation of a blood clot in a deep vein, usually in a calf or thigh muscle. DVT can cause painful, swollen, red, warm and/or engorged veins. The chronic pain and swelling may make it difficult for you to get around. If you do have any of these DVT symptoms (especially with sudden onset) call your doctor right away:

  • Swelling of leg
  • Pain or tenderness in leg
  • Warmth of skin of affected leg
  • Red or discolored skin in leg
  • Visible surface veins
  • Leg fatigue

Pulmonary Embolism

If a blood clot dislodges and travels to your lungs it's called a pulmonary embolism, and it can be fatal. A PE is a blockage of the the lung usually by a DVT clot. Some symptoms of a pulmonary embolism are difficulty breathing, sudden coughing which brings up blood with sharp chest pain, palpitations, or severe lightheadedness Severe cases can lead to lung collapse, low blood pressure, and sudden death.
