Yaz Deep Vein Thrombosis
What is Deep Vein Thrombosis?
Women taking Yaz birth-control pills are at increased risk of developing deep vein thrombosis, a serious medical condition in which a blood clot forms in the blood stream in a vein deep inside your body. When these blood clots, which typically form in deep veins of the lower leg, thigh, or arms, break free and flow though the blood stream, they can reach the lungs, causing a serious and potentially deadly condition called
pulmonary embolism.
A deep vein thrombosis that forms in the thigh is more likely to break off and lead to
pulmonary embolism than clots that form in other parts of the body.
Between 350,000 and 600,000 Americans suffer from deep vein thrombosis every year and more than 100,000 pulmonary embolism deaths each year are said to be either directly or indirectly caused by the condition. Your risk of developing DVT increases if you are over 60, inactive for long periods of time such as when flying on an airplane, are obese, and have a genetic predisposition.
What Are the Symptoms of Deep Vein Thrombosis?
The most common symptoms of deep vein thrombosis include pain, swelling and redness of the leg, thigh or arm, along with dilation of the surface veins near the blood clot. However, Yaz DVT can present without any symptoms.
How is DVT Treated?
If you have DVT, treatment with anticoagulants usually lasts for 3 to 6 months. If you have had blood clots before, you may need a longer period of treatment. You may need to take anticoagulants as long as risk factors for Yaz PE are present which sometimes is indefinitely. Some people cannot take blood thinners so other measures are undertaken, such as having a filter put into your vena cava.
Graduated compression stockings can reduce the swelling after a blood clot has developed in a leg. The leg swelling comes from valve damage in the leg veins. The pressure keeps blood from pooling and clotting.
